The question nobody could afford to ask
AI doesn't only make existing work faster. Sometimes, a previously impossible question becomes cheap enough to ask.
Every fabric goes through rigorous lab testing before it ever becomes a garment. When those reports come back, quality teams diligently review the results to ensure everything passed. But there is a secondary, much harder question: did the third-party lab actually run every single test they were supposed to? Did they execute those tests correctly?
Catching a missing or incorrectly-run test requires cross-referencing thousands of multi-page lab reports against complex, constantly evolving spec sheets. It is a complex problem that is practically impossible for any human team to do at a global scale. Quality teams do their best to spot-check, but the sheer volume means it is an industry-wide blind spot.
One of our customers shifted this calculus.
Instead of accepting that limitation, they empowered their quality team to build an agentic operation that automatically reads every single test report, compares it against the master spec, derives which tests were supposed to run and how, and flags any gaps.
Now, this check runs on every fabric for pennies. At first glance, it is tempting to call this "automation," but that isn't quite right. They didn't replace a manual process or save thousands of hours, because that level of exhaustive cross-referencing was never happening at scale to begin with. The value isn't time saved; it is pure risk mitigation. Catching a single missing test prevents a bad fabric from turning into a hundred thousand garments that have to be thrown out.
There are two kinds of AI projects. The first makes existing work faster, which is easy to pitch because you can point to the hours saved. The second does work that was previously impossible. It doesn't just speed up an old process; it answers a question you couldn't afford to ask.
To find these projects, look for the most thorough person on your team. Ask them what they would check if they had infinite time. That’s your next build.
